1.3 CONTAMINATION OF WATER BODIES

•Decayingbodiesofthedeceasedhumansandanimals,theirmasscremation,,septicfailure,andcross-contaminationofthesewerlineswiththedrinkingwaterdistributionsystemscouldimpactsurfaceandgroundwaterquality,thusincreasingtheriskofwater-borneillnessespost-earthquake.•Toxicchemicalsreleasedfromhouseholdsandindustrieswillbesoakedintothesoilandwilleventuallyendupingroundwaterorrivers,contaminatingdrinkingwatersourcesofmillionsofpeople.

 

1.4 EFFECTS ON SURFACE WATER

•Springsandtraditionalstonespoutsdriedupinmanyplaceswhereasnewonesappearedatotherplaces,resultinginseverewatershortageandalsoinstigatedconflictsbetweencommunities.

•Alargenumberoflandslidestriggeredbytheearthquakeresultedinthegeneratinganestimated19,118,538m3ofsediment,drasticallyincreasingsedimentloadsindownstreamwatercourses.

•Increasedsand,clayandslitparticlesmayresultinrisingriverbeds,sedimentationandfloodinginflatterlow-lyingareas/Teraiandalsoadverselyimpactaquaticfloraandfauna
