In the story; In Lucky’s “think” he says
In the play Waiting for Godot Samuel Beckett chose God and Godot to represent a higher power that brings both faith and hope to Vladimir and Estragon. No one really knows who Godot is, but it is known from Beckett’s perspective that God and Godot have similar qualities. In this play time is a great factor and he uses it to show the echoing of life.Samuel Beckett used traditional spirituality to set morals; Many of times Didi and Gogo speak of Christ or things from the Bible that they reflect on. For example, Estragon refused to put on his boots and said he was fine because Christ walked around barefootedVLADIMIR. But you can’t go barefoot!ESTRAGON. Christ didVLADIMIR. Christ! What has Christ got to do with it? You’re not going to compare yourself to Christ!ESTRAGON. All my life I’ve compared myself to him.(43)He then says he has been comparing himself to Christ his whole life, Beckett makes it known that Christ is not Godot. Pozzo also has a connection with Spiritual values, when asked who he was, he claimed, Of the same species as myself. he burst into an enormous laugh.Of the same species as Pozzo! Made in God’s image! (15). The Bible states that “God created mankind in his own image.”(Genesis 1:27). This also correlates to Estragon comparing himself to Christ, this shows that there are religions and high values other than Godot. Soon after Pozzo’s statement, Pozzo asks peremptorywho is Godot?” as if they are not the same (15). He doesn’t know who Godot is but he does know who God is. Most people get an idea that Godot is God because they are to be portrayed as similar in the story; In Lucky’s “think” he says “Given the existence as uttered forth in the public works of Puncher and Wattmann of a Personal God quaquaquaqua with white beard…”(33). Their God has a white beard and is a personal God like in the Christian faith. In the Holy Bible, it states “The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow”(Revelations 1:14). The boy in the play serves as a messenger for Godot:BOY. I mind the goats, Sir.VLADIMIR. Is he good to you?BOY. Yes Sir.(42)Goats represent the devil in the Holy Bible. Sheep are the people and the shepherd of the sheep is Jesus. In the case that the boy is a representation of satan or in affiliation, why would Godot send him to give a message? The boy’s brother would be Jesus because he is the shepherd of the holy bible and in Waiting for Godot the brother minds the sheep this boy is also beaten:BOY. He beats my brother, Sir.BOY. He minds the sheep, Sir.Christ is beaten before he is crucified not by God but by Christian prosecutors. The boy comes in the first act and in the second, both times near the end . The first time he serves as a messenger for Godot. He is questioned by Vladimir about Godot. The Boy says in the first act:BOY. Mr. Godot . . .VLADIMIR. Obviously . . . Pause. Approach.ESTRAGON. violently Will you approach! The Boy advances timidly. What kept you so lateVLADIMIR. You have a message from Mr. Godot? (40)Vladimir and Estragon have been waiting for Godot and are both very overwrought about the Boy. He tells Vladimir, “Mr. Godot told me to tell you he won’t come this evening but surely tomorrow (41). However, the next day the boy shows again to give Vladimir another message. The same message as the day before, when questioned again he claims to not have any memory or have seen anyone from the day before. Everything seems to repeat in the same order as before, and no one seems to notice.VLADIMIR. He said that Godot was sure to come tomorrow. Pause. What do you say to that?ESTRAGON. Then all we have to do is wait on here. (44) Vladimir ask the boy if he has send him before, the same as he did in the second act. In the Bible it says “Now Spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.” (Numbers 22:19) This correlates to Didi and Gogo spending night after night close to the tree so that they can go to it in the morning to receive Godots message.Everyday Godot sends a messenger to tell them a new thing or just that Godot will come tomorrow. The Boy seems to be this bottle of hope. He comes every day to reassure them that Godot is coming again. In Hebrews it says, “We who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.”(Hebrews 6:18) Each night Vladimir and Estragon have the option to leave, they ask each other:VLADIMIR. We can still part, if you think it would be better. ESTRAGON. It’s not worth while now. Silence.VLADIMIR. No, it’s not worth while now. Silence.ESTRAGON. Well, shall we go?VLADIMIR. Yes, let’s go. They do not move. Curtain(45)In the end, they always stay. The boy is encouraging Vladimir and Estragon to keep spending the night at the tree and to keep waiting on Godot so that he can keep coming back, just to tell them once more that Godot will be here tomorrow. The Boy gives them hope each night so that they can live on the next day and ask the same questions and do the same things.Godot sends the Boy who minds the goats, and the one who minds the sheep is beaten. If this is corresponding to the Bible this means that the Boy is Satan or close in comparison, and if the Boy is Satan then Godot isn’t God, and if Godot isn’t God, what could possibly be worth waiting for, for however long they have been waiting? Estragon said it himself that he has nothing to live for, maybe they have been waiting forever.:ESTRAGON: The best thing to do is to kill me, like the otherVLADIMIR: What other? Pause. What other?ESTRAGON: Like the billions of others(52)Estragon is waiting for death, he even suggests twice to hang themselves. Vladimir has hope and denies the fact they can’t live forever and he suggests, “Let us not waste our time in idle discourse! Pause. Vehemently. Let us do something, while we have the chance! It is not every day that we are needed. (70). The best thing to do is something even though nothing will come of their lives, why spend time worrying about time. Time is such a valuable thing, and in this play, it seems to be the only thing. Vladimir and Estragon spend all of their time bickering and waiting for someone to make their time spent worth the while. Didi, Gogo and even Pozzo do not even recall what happened to them the day before, they are senseless like the blind when it comes to time, as Pozzo says, “The blind has no notion of time. The things of time are hidden from them too.”(77) Without notice, time passes by and pieces of life start to fall away and all there is left to do is to wait. Vladimir and Estragon have this talk about time and memory; Pozzo becomes angry at the use of the word “when”, He says “one day he went dumb, one day I went blind, one day we’ll go deaf, one day we were born, one day we shall die, the same day, the same second, is that not enough for you?clamer. They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it’s night once more.”(80) The last sentence in the quote telling the story of life and how it is relentless, the moment someone is born they start to die, over the course of one life so much can be done but time slows you down and death waits for you in the end.
