Sodium bicarbonate and alkaline diets are frequently used to treat cancer
cells.  When looking at a cancer cell, it
is understood that they thrive within an acidic environment; if the environment
stays acidic then the cancer cells will continue to spread and grow throughout
the body. Alkaline treatment is simply a way to raise blood pH (Schreuder
2015). Dr. O Young’s choice to use sodium bicarbonate is due to its basic pH, which
could instill an alkaline environment (Yeo and Quinn
2017). In a specific study, sodium bicarbonate had positive effects on certain cancers in animals (Dayisoylu, Üngör, Tosun, Ersöz, Duman, Taskesen,
?enel 2014). The animals went from 67% to
0.1% developing cancer after being with baking soda (Dayisoylu, Üngör, Tosun, Ersöz, Duman, Taskesen,
?enel 2014). The study was conducted on rats,
which are a good model for humans, due to their genetic complexity (Dayisoylu, Üngör, Tosun, Ersöz, Duman, Taskesen,
?enel 2014).

Additionally, cancer cells have a very
narrow pH tolerance in which they can preform mitosis, between 6.5-7.5; the
body’s blood pH level is 7.4″(Shaw 2013). If you consider an alkaline diet, which
mainly consists of vegetables and fruits, it creates a basic environment, which
challenges the growth of cancer cells (Shaw 2013).

Continually, a study done by Keith Brewer identified that cancer
cells share one characteristic; they have no pH control mechanism (Shaw 2013). Brewer’s
summary conclusion was that by changing the pH of cancer cells to alkaline
(above 7.5), they will cease to function (Shaw 2013).  In other words, he proposed
that cancer cells will die if they are pushed into an alkaline oxygenated
state. Furthermore, alkaline therapy has been used since the mid 1900’s (Shaw
2013). Studies conducted during this time showed that terminally ill patients
who underwent alkaline therapy have a 50% success rate of survival (Shaw 2013).

Furthermore, patients who forewent any radiation therapy and changed to an
alkaline diet showed an 80% response rate (Shaw 2013). Alkaline therapy’s success
is due to the fact that cancer cells mistake alkaline minerals for potassium,
which is an important element of cellular function (Shaw 2013). However these
minerals cannot function as potassium does and causes the cancer cell to die.

infection by Candida (a fungus) contributes to the development of cancer

able to adapt to whatever environment it is invading which results in the
various types of tumors (Sunridge Medical 2017). Baking soda is commonly used
for alkaline therapy because of its elevated pH, but more importantly, because
fungi are unable to adapt to the environment it creates (Sunridge Medical 2017). Finally, Nobel Prize winner Dr. Otto
Warburg’s work was revolutionary towards the understanding of cancer growth and
the role alkalinity and acidity could have in prevention tactics (Schreuder
2015). Conclusively, his work theorized that if we wish to treat cancer
effectively then we must alkalize the body or the cancer cells will continue to
feed on the acidity of it (Schreuder 2015).


In conclusion, sodium bicarbonate and
alkalinity is a crucial factor in the prevention of cancer cells expansion and
growth. As proven from the studies listed and the research gather I believe it
is fair to deem sodium bicarbonate in the treatment of cancer as not a
pseudoscience. In summary, as Dr. Otto Warburg quoted “Every person who has
cancer, has a pH that is too acidic.” (Schreuder 2015).
