It has been widely used in the construction of buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, subways and other infrastructures. Concrete has one major flaw and that it is prone to cracking. Cracking is one of concrete’s worst flaw because it can affect the whole building. What if there’s a way to build structures and buildings without having to worry it will collapse on top of us because of simple cracks? Or having to worry about spending money on fixing the cracks?  That’s what Dr. Henk Jonkers, a microbiologist from the Delft University of Technology, was thinking when he developed the idea to turn concrete into a self-healing material.But, how can concrete heal itself? Simple, Jonkers mixed concrete with specific types of bacteria (Bacillus), along with Calcium lactate, phosphorous and nitrogen as the nutrient, to originate the bio self-healing concrete that produces limestone biologically to heal the cracks that appear on its surface. These specific bacteria can lie dormant within concrete for 200 years but when the concrete cracks and water seep into the cracks and it will activate the bacteria. Once they are activated, they start feeding with the Calcium lactate, consuming the Oxygen and turning it into limestone. Then after 28 days, the limestone solidifies on the cracked surface. Other than it can self-heal, Bioconcrete has many other benefits. First, it is sustainable.Jonkers believe that Bioconcrete can last for 200 years. Second, it can absorb water but it also reduced in permeability. The thing about concrete that it leaked when it cracks. With Bioconcrete won’t find any leakage problem. Since it doesn’t have any leakage, the risk of corrosion in the metal inside of the concrete is very small. The last but not least, Bioconcrete is eco-friendly since it used microbes as its healing agent.Bioconcrete meet many challenges along the way of the making. First, the capsule that contains the bacteria and its nutrients take up 20 percent of the volume of the concrete so it weakens the concrete by 25 percent. Second, since the nutrient is Calcium Lactate, the bio-concrete is doubled in the price of conventional concrete. Dr. Jonkers fixed this problem by changing the nutrient with glucose-based nutrient, so the bio-concrete can be cheaper in price.In conclusion, bio self-healing concrete is a revolutionary material that can change the way we build the world.
