What health issue does Solu-Medrol treat?
Solu-Medrol is used to treat
asthma, allergic reactions, inflammation, flare-ups of ongoing illnesses, and
many other medical problems. May also be used to lessen some symptoms of
cancer. This medicine is a corticosteroid. Treating certain conditions
associated with decreased adrenal gland function. It is also used to treat
severe inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, certain
blood disorders, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and certain eye and skin
How does it work?
Solu-Medrol mimics the actions of
cortisol—a naturally occurring steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands.
Methylprednisolone, the active ingredient in Solu-Medrol, is a corticosteroid
that is similar in nature to natural hormones produced by the adrenal glands in
the body. Solu-Medrol is utilized to reduce swelling and the body’s natural
immune system response. It works by binding DNA in the cells of the body and
regulating the expression of certain genes. This increases the body’s production
of certain proteins and enzymes that inhibit the action of inflammatory cells.
It also decreases the permeability of blood vessels to present migration of
inflammatory cells to the site of injury (Dority).
How is Solu-Medrol administered?
Solu-Medrol is 30 mg/kg, given
intravenously over a period of at least 30 minutes. The large doses may be
repeated every 4-6 hours for up to 48 hours (McAuley).
How is Solu-Medrol absorbed?
Solu-Medrol has been classified as
a rapid absorption form of medication that is absorbed through the
gastrointestinal tract, 30 mg/kg over a 20 minute period or 1g over 30 to 60
minutes, peak Solu-Medrol plasma concentrations of approximately 20 mcg/mL was
achieved after an intravenous infusion of Solu-Medrol (Medsafe).
How is Solu-Medrol Distributed?
Solu-Medrol is widely distributed throughout
the body, crosses the blood-brain barrier and crosses the placental barrier (Medsafe).
How is Solu-Medrol metabolized?
Solu-Medrol is metabolized within
the liver to inactive metabolites. Metabolism in the liver occurs primarily via
the CYP3A4 (GLOWM).
How is Solu-Medrol excreted?
The mean elimination half-life of Solu-Medrol
is in the range of 1.8 to 5.2 hours. Solu-Medrol is excreted through 75% urine,
9% feces, and rest in the bile (eMC).
