Old age is usually the end of life cycle of people
and their health may deteriorate physically and mentally and this varies
culturally and historically. Each person’s aging process differs from
individual to individual depending on their food habits, lifestyle and various
such concerns. Older people are people full of life those are purely undergoing
senescence, the universal and inevitable changes that all of us experience from
the time we are born.
The Old age is an integral
part of human life. It is the evening of life. It is unavoidable, unwelcomed
and problem ridden phase of life. It is interesting that everyone wants to live
a long life but not to be old. Old age complete the life pattern. It has its
own pleasures though different from the pleasures of youth. Older people have a
wealth of experience so that it would be more helpful to every other people.
Older people even help to gain knowledge and wisdom And also people will get to
learn morals, principles and value from them. They also teach people to to love , to
care ,to give, to forgive, to accept, to support and face life. Older people
can be irritable because of worries and unwanted tension.
People undergo so many age
related problems health wise and vision loss among the elderly is a major
health care problem. Some may lose hearing ability and the functioning of
organs decreases gradually. The metabolism of the aged people is very less and
hence they cannot have normal food .
Old people are like infants its almost like people’s lives start to
reverse when they start aging , they tend to act like a toddler and hence
people sometimes cry , whine , scream and yell and they complain and throw a
tantrum because they have mood swings very often.
Aging is a natural process, and longevity is the desirable and natural
aim of any society .Aging is also a risk factor for declines in function and
health .Older people have been stereotyped for example, as burdens on society
by virtue of their numbers and being dependant on family members. Two hundred
years ago someone aged 40 seemed ‘old’, today they would be considered ‘young’.
Old Age was defined as in the present as
beginning somewhere around the ages of 60 to 65.The scientific study of old
age, the aging process and the particular problems of old people is called
gerontology. Conventionally, gerontologists and demographers choose 60 or 65 as
the lower limit of old age for good reasons. Sixty or 65 are the ages at which state
or private pensions are most frequently paid in many countries.
Ageism is something
undesirable and one manifestation is the widespread assumption that older people have simple needs such as for food , warmth ,
cleanliness and safety whereas the reality is that older people need effective
and skilful practice. In the society everyone must prefer using the term ‘older
people’ rather than ‘the elderly’, which stigmatises the 50 years of life which
can be experienced under this term. In Older age , people may be experiencing a
continuity of poverty, which could be worsened by ageing For example, as a
result of widowhood or the experience of illness.
