It sells all sport wear, balls for each and every sport E.G. football,
basketball, tennis balls as well as selling the equipment such as tennis
rackets and more. They also supply trainers and other styles of footwear for
men, women and children. They also have an advantage on its digital storefront
proving to be the most popular for online shopping with it’s easy to understand
interface and showing off most popular products, which can prove to be a very
good part of the business in the future.2
ITunes is a digital storefront that sells Music, audiobooks
that sends .m4p file/ .m4v files to an IOS enabled device/ software system. This
allows for it to be digitally played through any Apple device ort computer with
ITunes installed. The physical versions of the songs are not able to be bought
through the storefront but the digital versions can be downloaded again and
again onto different devices and can be played without another device.2
It also has the ability to differentiate the genres of all the products in such
a way so as to make it easier to find the style of music/films/books3
you enjoy the most. It updates frequently with newer songs released by big
names and smaller bands.4
and differences (M1)
The similarities between ITunes
and JD sports is that both use online storefronts to sell their products to a
wider audience than if they set up shops in high streets. They also both use
their storefronts to sell products that could not be found in a high street
shops so that they can ship another one directly to the buyer’s door. The
differences between the companies is that JD sports only sells sporting
equipment whereas iTunes only sells music, which cannot be used in sports.
ITunes also only sells digital products, which means that it is code and not an
object that someone can hold or touch.
JD Sports –
Delivery & tracking online, getting the product to the customer
Once an item has been purchased from the JD sport website
there are three main way in which the delivery is carried out. There is the
standard delivery, next day delivery, premium next day delivery and click and
collect. Standard delivery usually involves paying £3.99 on any order that is
less than £60 and if it is over the delivery is free. Next day delivery
involves paying a fee of £4.99 minimum regardless of the overall costs of the
products but does have the added bonus of being delivered in a set window of
time for the next day. Premium next day delivery involves a fee of £5.99 and
comes without an allotted delivery time the next day. Click and collect just
sends the order to the nearest pick up point and has no extra fees involved.
also includes the function of being able to track where your delivery has
gotten to, using either email alerts, account usage or both.
ITunes – Delivery
& tracking online, getting the product to the customer
ITunes does not require people to have their music delivered
directly to their door. Instead it uses the internet to send the music and/ or
film files to the device that has paid for it. This gets rid of costs for
transport but does cause a slight increase on maintenance of the servers that
ITunes runs off. This allows for the music to be instantly sent over the
internet into the device that the user wants to have their music on. This
allows for them to have the music quickly, easily and efficiently, whilst also
showing how long it will take to fully complete its download.1
The similarities between the two businesses in this area are
that they both have some form of tracking service with which they are able to
see where the product is on its delivery path. It also is able to send multiple
products at once without having separate orders. The differences are that one
has a progression bar whereas the other has a set stage of delivery showing
where in the process it should be. It also has different delivery fees. ITunes has
none but JD sports has quite a few options.
The JD sports app Functions practically in the same way that
the website works, with the ability to find and order products only from a
smartphone or tablet. It allows for a much easier time in ordering and finding
things for those on the go, not requiring a person to bring a laptop around
with them to order a new pair of trainers. It also allows for people to find
things much easier with an intuitive layout that works much better for mobiles
than it does for PC’s or laptops.1
For example the user is able to order a new pair of trainers (or any other
sporting equipment) from their phone whilst out and about and have it set up to
deliver the next day.
getting the product to the customer
The iTunes application allows for ease of access into a wide
range of music, films, books and games with ways to narrow down what users are
trying to find to specific genres, artists and popularity1.
This is a very useful way of doing things as it helps customers get to what
they want to buy and prevents quitting and going to a competitor’s website to
find a song due to frustration and the layout and design of the application. 2
For example a user can find a new piece of media they recently found they enjoy
and press the buy button to have it instantly download onto the device to be
played for the user’s enjoyment.
and differences (M1)
The similarities between the two are that both have app
versions of their websites for buying items on the go or on your mobile phone.
Another similarity is that they both have set areas for specific items even on
their app versions, which is very useful to the consumer. The differences would
be that iTunes was designed from the ground up to be an app for both computers
and phones whereas JD sports app is just the website converted into an app.
Another difference is that the two apps run on different systems, iTunes being
somewhat more sophisticated to accommodate for the thousands of options of
products compared to JD sports app.
JD Sports –
For payment JD sports offers a wide range of options,
including a large number of debit and credit cards, apple and android pay as
well as PayPal for their online services. As well as these options they also
have the option of using a gift card system. The credit/debit cards use the
money set by the company/the money from your bank account to pay for the items
they have on offer. The gift card has a set value that has been already bought
within the shop so that it can be used to pay for things on the website without
using the bank details.
Like JD sports website, Apple uses a similar amount of
payment options for the iTunes store. It allows for credit or debit cards,
PayPal and gift cards1.
However the payment options then begin to differ. They allow for country
specific payment options, such as Alipay, China unionPay, WeChatpay and App
store top up cards2. These
options allow for people from other countries to use the common form of online
payment compared to what other markets would use. Especially in China, the
biggest tech market in the world, this can prove to be very useful as it can
attract potential investors with the ability to easily use whatever form of
payment they want.
and differences: (M1)
The similarities begin with the lack of option to pay in
cash, instead using only credit/ debit cards or gift cards. It also has the
ability to pay with online payment types such as PayPal. The differences are
that iTunes offers the ability to use region exclusive payment options whereas
JD sports does not, as well as offering a much larger selection of cards they
can take payment from whereas JD sport only has a limited amount of payment
JD sports is often held up as the best format for businesses
using social media1.
They use almost all the most popular social media platforms – Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. With all these platforms they show off their
new products ahead of release. This allows them to gain qualitative data on the
customer’s opinions on new products, good or bad. They also use their social
media accounts to help out with customer issues as they provide answers to
problems they are facing with products and/or the website, as well as instore
ITunes – Social
The way iTunes uses social media differs slightly due to its
experiment with the system Ping1.
Previous versions of IOS included the ability to use a social media system
called Ping. This experiment proved to be a failure that still lingers in the
old IOS versions2.
With this experiment they have learnt that their social media platform should
not be used specifically on their own site, but use tried and tested methods
The similarities is that they both use big name brands of
social media to get their message of sales and new products out into the world
as well as having quite a large number of followers. The differences begin with
iTunes failed attempt at trying to create their own social media platform which
they though would take off and the other use is that JD sports uses advertising
with real products whereas iTunes can only show new releases onto its product.
