There are different treatments option available for an atherosclerosis patient depending on How severe it is. The treatments are change of life style, surgeries, medicines, modifiable and non modifiable risk factors.Healthy Life style: changing life style plays a key role in the treatment as it can prevent atherosclerosis or even delays the chances of it becoming severe. Another reason why following healthy life style is beneficial is because it will control the risk factors that are commonly associated with atherosclerosis such as, high BMI, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity. Healthy life style includes dietary modification, physical activities, weight control, quitting intake of cigarettes and alcohol.Dietary modification is basically following a healthy diet which consist of certain types of food that does not increase risk factors or chances of artery blockage. It involves the adoption of healthy eating habits such as daily intake of different fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, skinless poultry, seafood, dairy products which are fat free. Low level of sodium, sugar, fats and refined grains in food is necessary.Physical activity: Being physically active is important as it improves fitness level as well as the health. Aerobic exercises such as walking, swimming, jogging or biking at least 3 to 4 times of the weak is recommended. It ensures exercise tolerance, lowers body weight, lowers blood pressure, lowers LDL levels, increase HDL levels and insulin sensitivity. substance abuse: Quitting smoking and intake of alcohol is another way of treating or preventing atherosclerosis as it will reduce the damage to lining if the hearts arteries. It will increase the concentration of oxygen in the body and lower the level of carbon monoxide. Also, it will reduce the over production of adrenaline which in turn reduces the hearts abnormal heart beats and blood pressure. Quitting alcohol can improve abnormal heart beats, blood pressure, heart muscle damage, prevent stroke and other diseases like liver damage and cancers..Surgeries: There are three different types of surgeries for atherosclerosis patients and its provided based on the severity of the disease.PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention): This procedure involves the opening of blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. It improves the patients blood flow to the heart, reduces chest pain. To ensure the arteries stay open even after the surgery a mesh tube known as stent is placed in the arteries.CABG ( coronary artery bypass grafting): arteries or veins from other part of the body is used bypass the narrowed or blocked artery. It improves blood flow to the heart, reduces chest pain and prevents the chances or heart attack recurrence in future. Carotid endartercetomy: plaques accumulated carotid arteries in the neck. It will improve loud flow to the brain and reduce chance of stroke.Medicines: Antiplatelets are medicines usually given to an atherosclerosis patient. Antiplatelets drugs are drugs like aspirin, clopidorgel, prasurgel and ticagrelor. The most commonly used drug is aspirin which improves rate of survival by reducing the clots in the coronary arteries. platelets normally work as blood clotting factor when there is excessive bleeding due to cuts however in case of an atherosclerosis patient they cause problems by blocking the arteries after the plaque ruptures and reducing blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body. The patient is supposed to take the aspirin for life time.Another drug that needs to be taken with aspirin is an anticouagulant drug called warfarin which is responsible for reducing the liver’s ability to produce blood clotting proteins (vitamin K). While taking these drugs its important for the patient to not take any other drugs like painkillers and ibuprofen as it can cause abnormal bleeding. In case of recurrence of ischemic attack or the patient is resistant to aspirin then clopidogrel can be given as a second option. However, even if this drug does not work then other options are drugs like ticgrelor and prasugrel drugs. As one of the main causes of atherosclerosis is high LDL levels in blood, its important to keep it at low level, therefore the treatment for this is intake of medicine known as Statins. Statins are type of medicine that lowers the level of LDL in the blood. There are five different types of atorvastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin and simvastatin. These medicine comes in form of tablets which is taken one per day. The treatment is supposed to be taken for life time. The medicine shouldn’t be taken with other medicine as it can increase chances of side effects for example muscle damage. It acts on the liver by reducing its production of cholesterol by reacting with a key enzymes reaction called HMG-CoA-reductase. Even though not the full production is stopped, the end results are that liver takes up high amount of cholesterols from the blood. Another beneficial factor of taking statin is that it also functions as a stabilizer for the fatty plaques within the arteries.
