This essay will explore how Therapeutic radiographers should maintain professional behavior in practice. Professionalism is having the ability to deliver the best patient centered care with the ability to also show respect and dignity  (Bhugra, 2005).  It is necessary for healthcare because it provides effective, safe, a patient-centred approach that promotes a smooth working relationship with different professionals  (Erin, 2017).   The Society and College of Radiographers (2017) provides a wide range of professional code and conducts, including behaviours and attitude when working with a patient, their families and other professionals in the workplace. Professionalism usually occurs naturally over time and it is obtained with essential skill and values (Ochonma, Eze, Eze & Okaro, 2015); this includes the appropriate use of language, emotional intelligence and respecting patient’s confidentiality. Professionals are also expected to know their limitation when dealing with patients (Cooper, 2012). Taking into consideration with these skills and values mentioned above can contribute to effective practice and effective partnership working with the service users. Therapeutic radiographers must retain professional behaviour at all times (Cooper, 2012).  Being able to control your own emotion is one of the key values to be acknowledged in this sector, in reference to the code of conduct, to maintain an appropriate and right behaviour.  Personal issues should not interfere and affect the performance of work. Professionals need to be able to manage their emotions and act appropriately towards other staff and patient. Inappropriate behaviour acts as a barrier which reduce patient satisfaction and provides low quality of care which affects the profession’s reputation, and at the same time, could cause harm and conflict towards the service users. Radiographers work with radiation so personal issue, sometimes affects the professional’s mental ability to perform safely which again lead to poor practice and increase risks to the patient and another member of staff (Challen et al., 2016). Thus, ability to manage and recognise own emotion can make the interaction between patient and radiographer smooth and professional, and at the same time increase productivity and accuracy. It is therefore vital for all healthcare workers to remain professional in order to protect and deliver high-quality care and safe health care to the patient, their family and other people involvedIn addition, the Society and College of Radiographers (2017) stated that healthcare professionals should have respect to show human dignity, regardless of the patient’s race, religion, age, background and ethnicity. Radiographers should have the knowledge to perform their duties as well as the ability to educate patients, in compliance with guideline and policies in place. Like other health professionals, radiographers are expected to show respect and treat the patient as a person with dignity and without judgement.  Jorm (2016) also highlighted that being professionals includes respecting colleagues in the workplace. Good teamwork with open communication increases the likelihood of a better decision making for patients. Each and every professional should listen to one another; respect and value each other’s suggestion and opinion for a wider understanding and better decision outcome, contributing to an integrated care planning. Moreover, (Professionalism in healthcare professionals, 2017) stated that all members of staff should always remain professional inside and outside of the workplace. It is important for radiographers to create and maintain a therapeutic relationship between them and patients to be able to create a successful outcome The BMA’s handbook of ethics and law (2017). In addition to that, professional should still be able to maintain the boundary, which suggests not getting involved with any further relationship such as accepting a financial offer from the patient or personal relationship with patients Cooper (2012). Radiographers have ethical considerations to take into account in practice and that includes refusal to any form of invitation that could possibly break the profession’s reputation. According to Jorm (2016), the staff member has the right to refuse to promote ethics.Honesty and integrity are example of special quality that radiographers should have (Cooper, 2012). Having this quality allows them to have an open and close relationship approach with colleagues as well as patients; therefore, professionalism is all about setting a good image to gain respect and to build an open honest relationship between one another, both other professionals and patient Jorm (2016). The role of radiographer involves forming a long-term relationship with the patients. Therefore, it is important for the staff to maintain professionalism while at the same time getting involved thoroughly with the case. This means that radiographer should be cautious of things they put on social media, even though considered to be outside work, it still reflects on what they are going to be seen in practice. The HCPC states that social media such as the internet are the main risk which crosses the boundaries between being professional and personal matters (Professionalism in healthcare professionals, 2017). People tend to put a lot of private stuff on social media such as pictures and home address or phone number which can be easily accessed by patients (Hughes, 2012). Thus, they need to be able to have skills to show empathy but not give out personal information about themselves in order to carry out a successful, safe and effective workplace. Moreover, radiographers must have a good communication skill. Patients are able to observe professional’s communication skills and it is the radiographer’s responsibility to show confidence, competence and compassion when they communicate with patients to build patient trust (Sari, Prabandari & Claramita, 2016). Having an appropriate knowledge, training and good communication skills will result in best patient care and reduce the patient’s uncertainty Stonehouse, D. (2015).  It is vital to communicate with patients using non-verbal as hospitals are usually noisy environment for a discussion. Thus, facial expression, body language, eye contact should be focused on each other to show interest and encourage patients to express their feelings and needs Stonehouse.D (2014). Also, workplaces promote equality, it is still important that a professional is able to understand and communicate with peers using the universal language, English. It is important that effective communication is promoted to interact with others as this again results in the patient care outcome Zaidi, S. H, (2013;2014). Therapeutic radiographers work with different professionals so they need to communicate with different professionals such as oncologist and physician so they all must have the ability to deliver information clearly and accurately.  Barriers to effective communication include the use of jargon and other languages can lead to loss of information which this increase errors of treatments, putting patients in danger.Furthermore, attitude and appearance also plays an important role when delivering care for patients. The impression they set out to your patient affects the overall service they provide to them (Bhugra, 2005). It is therefore vital for radiographers to wear an appropriate clothing to demonstrate professionalism (Professionalism in healthcare professionals, 2017). As much as important for registered radiographers to understand the importance of this, students however, also needs to understand the significance of wearing the uniform provided by the university, in respect to the profession as well as the reputation of the establishment. It is essential to always look clean as it reflects how professional they are as a person. Also, student radiographers should use an appropriate formal language when communicating with patients and member of staffs. It is the radiographer’s role to ensure right terminologies are used and right approach is used. According to patient confidentiality guide, all therapeutic radiographers are expected not to withdraw or discuss any confidential information to anyone even with their peers outside of work (Stonehouse, D, 2015). They need to ensure that all the patient’s files stored in a specific store and they must not leave important files on display in public places including desks. All Radiographers must ensure that all patients must remain outside the treatment room until they are called for their treatments. According to (Stonehouse, D, 2015), patients confidential information always needs to be stored in a computer protected by passcode to ensure patients safety.  However, radiographer is also trained to strive for beneficence and act to benefit the patient. Nonetheless, the potential benefit of any intervention should outweigh the possible risk in order for the action to be ethical and to balance benefit, risk and cost to provide the best overall result. Patients with certain illness such dementia patients are incapable of making a decision so they personal information is protected and stored under the Data Protection Act 1998. It is patient’s right to refuse to disclose their personal information to anyone and all health workers must respect and protect patients at all costs and reduce the chance of putting them at risk by following the policy (patients confidentiality). In conclusion, radiographers need to maintain professionalism at all the time because it allows them to deliver safe, high standard and most of all it leads health care (Stonehouse, D, 2015). It is vital for healthcare works to demonstrate professionalism in working place to gain respect, to show their goal is to be supportive and deliver the best healthcare to the patient  as well as to show support and to be a team (Cooper, 2012). Radiographers are always working in environments where they have to interact with patients on a daily basis so patients have the ability to recognise and judge their skills based on their communication skills, appearance, manners and the way they interact with their peers (Bhugra, 2005). So when radiographers maintain professionalism, it shows patients and their peers that they have all the necessary medical knowledge, compassion, empathy and respect to meet their patient’s needs.
