markers of obesity and gut microbiota abundance in overweight/obese adults.Study design is a randomized
double blind, placebo-controlled study.The study concluded that in

may yield a small but significant metabolic befits and aid in obesity

Positive aspects of the study

Study design is appropriate to the stated study purpose and
ensure biases are minimized (Wright, 2009).Appropriate dietary assessment, that included a 3 day weighed
food record for precision of portion sizes (Batterham et al., 2016; Ishii et al., 2017).Inclusion of both gender to exclude bias (Tannenbaum et al., 2016). Incremental increase of fibre intake to minimise gastrointestinal
discomfort (Eswaran et al., 2013).

Negative aspects of the study

Self selected diet. Participants may reduce habitual food
portion size intake or increase their physical activities to ensure weight loss
during the study period (Rolls, 2014).The paper does not mention anything on ethnicity /race of
participants. As different ethnic groups may respond differently to the yellow
pea fiber supplementation due to biological, environmental or social
differences (Taylor, 2005)Delivery of placebos alone as treatment in research has been
considered unethical, as it has been thought that deception is essential for
their effect (Petkovic et al., 2015).Ethical issuesApproved by the conjoint Health Research Ethics Board of the
University of Calgary, however did not mention being declared by the
Declaration of Helsinki (Rid and Schmidt, 2010).Deception is involved as some participants are randomly
assigned to placebo treatment (Stang et al., 2005). ConclusionThe results
obtained suggested that the supplementation of yellow pea fibre into the diet
of free living individuals has modest but significant benefits on body fat
reduction and post prandial glucose tolerance. However, limitations on
participants diet selection and physical activity resulted in constriction of a
vague conclusion.
